The Ningbo Eco-Corridor is an
ecological sustainable development project in Ningbo, China. This project had
rebuilt an area from uninhabitable brownfield to a 3.3 km eco-corridor. The
land using of this area include: residential, commercial, retail, school and
public green space. The original area has part of wet land where are living
space of migratory bird and aquatic organisms (e.g. white-flag dolphin and Chinese
alligator). The objective of this project is ecological rehabilitation,
especially aquatic environment. The process of project has three
main parts:
Hydrology: The previous river way be transformed into
floodplains and lowlands. The project could improve water quality from sewage
to clean water. The figure shows the plan of water system.
Geography: The eco-corridor be created hills and valleys that direct the flow of water across the
site.
Vegetation: ‘Native vegetation supports plant diversity and
encourages colonization by indigenous wildlife. Variegated plantings also serve
to purify ground water, cleanse stormwater run-off and create a unique sense of
place’ (2013 Professional Awards Jury).
The figures also show the plan of topography filter layers
and vegetation filter layers.
Ningbo Eco-Corridor project improve the environmental
quality of this place. According to Professional Awards Jury (2013), ‘Ningbo
Eco-Corridor creates vital habitat for native flora and fauna'. The project also provides enjoyable public green space for
local communities.
