Biesbosch Museum Island by SMV



The Biesbosch Museum has been rebuilt due to water resource safety. In fact, this area is a part of national water resource safety project. The Biesbosch Museum is a main entrance of Biesbosch national park. This new building also attractive thousands of visitors in short time. The picture shows the plan and section drawings of Biesbosch Museum Island.


The part of original structure has been preserve due to save materials and source of energy. The function of original building include exhibition, library, theatre and shop. This museum blend in surrounding environment and has ecological value. The following pictures show the existing building, proposal, landscape, special appearance of Biesbosch Museum Island.

This museum has several benefits, such as saving energy, purify sewage (e.g. willow filter) and so on. Both the new wing and existing volume are designed to minimize energy consumption. The glass of museum is heat-protecting glass. In addition, the green roof and earthwork of outside play a significant role for heat insulation. In winter, the geothermal system could provide comfortable environment for visitors. The sanitary wastewater is purified through a willow filter: the first in the Netherlands and an acknowledgement of thewickerculture of the Biesbosch.
